And re UBL .. hasn't there been monitoring of all his wives and children? Don't we know where they go, where they live, how they are supported? Wouldn't this intel shed light on UBL? Anybody know anything about such activities? Just wondering... CTW

Anybody with some reliable/substantiated update on the level of fighting in Afghanistan? The status of the Taliban? Al Quaida there?

Not exactly, but I did see this gem of a story on military.com:

Quote:
Taliban Fighter Who Was Freed From Guantanamo Prison Is Killed
New York Times - Free Registration Required (KABUL, Afghanistan SEP. 27)

A senior Taliban commander who had been released from the American detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, was killed Saturday in Uruzgan Province, Afghan officials reported Sunday. The commander, Maulavi Ghaffar, had spent eight months in the Guantanamo prison, said the Interior Minister, Ali Jalali. He had been captured after fighting for the Taliban in northern Afghanistan, Mr. Jalali said. After his release over a year ago he was appointed the Taliban's regional commander in Uruzgan and Helmand Provinces, said Jan Mohammad Khan, the governor of Uruzgan Province. The governor said Mr. Ghaffar had carried out attacks against American Special Forces soldiers and an attack on a district chief in Helmand in which three Afghan soldiers were killed.

ISLAMABAD, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Pakistan officials denied an Al Arabiya television report on Monday that top al Qaeda official Ayman al-Zawahri has been arrested in Pakistan.

"It is a negative, it is wrong," Brigadier Javed Cheema, Director General of the Interior Ministry's Crisis Management Cell, told Reuters.
