Kerry definitely won the showmanship aspect of the debate. However...
In my opinion, Kerry's model of reality is oversimplified. And his oversimplified perspective of reality is actually what gives him the confidence, as you could tell from his cockiness in the debate, that he's got all the answers for the world's problems.
George Bush struggled with some of his replies because, unlike John Kerry, Bush understands the complexities of the problems that the nation is dealing with. What probably frustrated Bush was that he, nor Kerry for that matter, if Kerry knew what he was talking about in the first place, simply could not properly address the complexities of the issues in the time alloted in this debate.
The only thing that the debate proved is that John Kerry would undoubtedly win a debate (again, based on showmanship, not honesty) against Osama bin Laden. But so what as bin Laden would simply walk away from the debate and plot more terrorist activities.
