In this day of the liberal feminist you cannot have a draft without drafting both men and women. There are plenty of jobs that a woman could do in the military without being in a combat environment.
I think that if a draft comes back there should be a 2 year requirement for everyone to do some form of government service. Military, social services --- teacher's aids -- something. This is the only way to cure the "owed" something problem with the children today.
However, I still believe that a draft is unnecessary. |

Doesn't your German friend know we're a bunch of zany extremist Bible thumpers over here? The biblical model is, when up against overwhelming odds, weed out any of your own who are afraid, and send them home.
We haven't even had to do that yet, much less initiate a draft. |

[Sounds like you're wasting your time. Your German friend is a lost cause and will believe anything that makes Bush look bad. It's so sad how propaganized our friends overseas have become. sigh]
You're right, it *is* a waste of time, and I know he will not be convinced of anything. I just wanted him to get a fair sampling of what other conservative Americans were thinking. Thanks to everyone who has responded. I can't think of anything that would make me madder than for our government to try to institute a draft in this day and age, especially when there is no need for one.

The draft is an issue created by the Democrats. Sen. Charles Rangel (Democrat weenie from NY) introduced the legislation. The White House did not ask for it, the military did not ask for it, the Republicans did not ask for it. Now, the that there is legislation out there, the Demo(n)crats now have their boogie man (self-created and going nowhere) _________________ Doc Ford

maybe not the draft but...........there are quite a few youngsters I would like to see put on "BIG" airplanes and dropped off in Iraq just so they would see what they would be missing not living in the U.S. |

The military does not want a draft, we don't need it. In a few years, when we still don't have a draft, remind your friend of who was right. |

The President can NOT start a draft. The congress must do that. So it is not only a lie, but incorrect. _________________

If your friend won't believe the actual documents showing it's only Democrats proposing a draft, he's a lost cause. I wouldn't waste any time with him on it.
Personally, I'd like to see our young people, mostly men (sorry any feminists out there, I just can't bring myself to draft women) serve a required two years in some manner supporting the country. Not necessarily military, but there are plenty of other causes where they could learn discipline and get some real education about life.
Drafting for military only would be self defeating today. _________________ Clark County Conservative |

I've heard an even more pragmatic argument AGAINST the draft: in today's high tech world, it takes too long (and is too expensive) to train people who will likely leave after a short term of service. If this argument is valid then it says any terms of enlistment for a future draft will necessarily be much longer (political suicide for politicians), or it just plain a'int never gonna happen! |
