For months now Senator Kerry and the Democrats have been stating how we needed to take more time for sanctions against Iraq to work and to put together a larger coalition before invading.

With new information coming out daily about the UN Oil for Food scandal and from the CIA WMD report, it’s obvious that giving sanctions more time to work would have been a policy for failure. All waiting on sanctions would have accomplished is to put more money into the pockets of French, Russian, and Chinese politicians while fattening up Saddam’s future WMD fund.

Through the CIA report we’ve come to find out that the French, Russians, Chinese and other countries were involved in massive briberies that put billions into the their and Saddam’s pockets. We also know that as well as spending this money on palaces, Saddam was keeping the important segments of his WMD program intact so that he could quickly ramp it up once sanctions were lifted. That the sanctions would have been lifted I have little doubt. One of the benefits the French in particular had from their illegal activities was the billions of dollars they would have made from the sales of unsanctioned Iraqi oil. Since weapons inspectors would not have found WMDs, the U.N. would have had justification to lift sanctions against Saddam. According to the CIA report once those sanctions were lifted Saddam would have had chemical weapons within 6 months and biological weapons within a year. In other words waiting and giving sanctions more time would have accomplished quite a bit for the French and Saddam. As for America, and our allies it would have been a potential disaster. We would have been facing an Iraq with a reconstituted WMD program, and a stronger army. Saddam also would have strengthened his ties with terrorist groups and potentially used terrorists to seek revenge for what we did to him. As for the Iraqi citizens, other then Baath party members, living standards would not have improved, and the murder and torture Saddam had reaped throughout his years would have gone on at the same or a faster pace.

Mr. Kerry’s other argument is that we should have formed a larger coalition, that we needed more allies. I would like to know exactly what allies he means. France, China and Russia were making money off of the Oil for Food Program and saw the potential profits they could make off of an unsanctioned Iraq controlled by Saddam. Germany does not historically use military forces outside of their borders, and with its government was very anti-war and anti-America. Most mid-east countries were out of the question because as much as they hated Saddam the last thing they wanted to see was a democratic Iraq and even if they were predisposed to help it would have been politically dangerous to have done so, potentially causing more problems the it would have solved. I can’t think of any countries that Kerry could have realistically added to the coalition that hadn’t already joined and Kerry should really come out and tell us what countries he had in mind.
