I have had the following exchange with Daniel Okrent, of the NYT regarding the missing 380 tons of HE munitions story. The exchange begins with my most recent letter to him, regarding the issue of fairness in the Time's campaign coverage, a new issue that I raised with him after he responded on the missing munitions story and why they covered it when they did:

"Dear Mr. Okrent,

Thank you for taking the time to pen a personal reply regarding the missing high explosives cache in Iraq, a cache that may have gone missing before the arrival of U.S. troops on the scene in Spring 03. I still maintain that the Times rushed to print with the story in a last ditch effort to derail George Bush's re-election bid.

But let me raise another issue with you, as a test of fairness. Why isn't John Kerry's meetings with the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese representatives in Paris on two occasions of interest? If the U.S. media serves as a watchdog for the public interest, then it should examine allegations that bear on the integrity and character of candidates. Kerry's meetings in Paris are surely worthy of much more intense scrutiny than the media has given to date.

Considering the fact that he has provided false and misleading claims on a number of issues relating to his Vietnam Service (the Christmas in Cambodia story being just one), it is certainly warranted to look into what happened in Paris in his transactions with the Viet Cong and NV delegations.

If this was a shoe that belonged to a Bush foot, believe me, you and your investigative reporters would be all over this story.

Dear Dr. Harwood,

I appreciate your concerns about The Times's reporting on the explosives missing from the Al Qaqaa site in Iraq. However, I think it is much too early to come to a conclusion that there is error here. I note three factors in particular: NBC News's clarification of their early report; The Times's on-the-record citation of the unit commander who arrived at Al Qaqaa on April 10 asserting that his troops did not conduct a search; and, finally, some mixed signals from the White House.
This story will, I am sure, continue to play out over the next several days. If The Times is indeed in error, that is certain to become clear, and I will say so in print. Until then, I can only suggest that you -- and I -- examine each charge and countercharge very carefully, and examine the evidence fully, before reaching conclusions.

I sent one as well. It's good to see that people are very quick to point our their 'mistakes'. Do they back-pedal? Nahh...they'll just dodge until after the election. Expect them to throw more BS out. They've outed themselves as a radical left wing rag that is willing to trade their respectability for a few votes.

Have they made any 'mistakes' accusing Kerry of anything? Did they point out that he has done NOTHING to help in the fight against terror? I don't think they would. The fact that they waited until a week before the election to sling that mud says a lot about them. They are nothing but a shill for Kerry.

They also did not verify their story. Sound like CBS? Think this wasn't planned with the Kerry team? They had 2 commercials attacking Bush the same day the story broke.

I find it EXTREMELY difficult to believe that our military did not know the
exact whereabouts of this large cache of weapons.

During the televised protion of the war, when embedded journalists were
in Iraq, I also recall the use of topical maps which were so precise, they
could practically zero in closeup and tell you the color of socks Saddam was wearing on a given day. Fortunately, a friend sent me this link to
prove my hunch was correct.
