I hope the Bush Administration does make this nomination.
Thomas would be an excellent choice for Chief Justice.
He is a very deliberate thinker with a fine intellect.
I doubt that the Judiciary Comittee would want to revisit
the debacle of Thomas's first confirmation hearing when they
attempted a "high-tech lynching" (Thomas's words)
which backfired on the Democrat senators.
This good man has my full support!

President Bush has launched an internal review of the pros and cons of nominating Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as the chief justice if ailing William Rehnquist retires, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

A top White House source familiar with Bush's thinking explains the review of Thomas as chief justice is one of several options currently under serious consideration. But Thomas is Bush's personal favorite to take the position, the source claims.

"It would not only be historic, to nominate a minority as chief justice, symbolizing the president's strong belief in hope and optimism, but it would be a sound judicial move.... Justice Thomas simply has an extraordinary record."

One concern is the amount of political capital Bush would have to spend in congress to make the move.

A chief justice must be separately nominated by Bush and confirmed by the Senate, even if the person is already sitting on the court.

The need to replace Rehnquist could arise by year's end, Bush aides now believe.

Officially, Bush advisers call any Supreme Court vacancy talk premature.

Lets see what the NAALCP (National Association for the Advancement of LIBERAL Colored People) would have to say about CT's nomination (if it occurs). Would they stoop so low again as to call him an Uncle Tom? If so, what would fair minded minority Americans think of it? The shine is off that penny!

As I have mentioned in a previous thread, Arlen Specter was very
supportive of Clarence Thomas during his confirmation hearings.
Should he get the chairmanship of the Judiciary Commitee, he would
be hard pressed to object to Thomas as Chief Justice. I, too, think
Thomas would be an excellent choice due to his deep intellect and
his age. I believe he is the youngest member of the court.

I've always admired Clarance Thomas and am still amazed at the jokes which still exist about him so many years later. However, I'm certain it is meant to keep the deception alive. The worst thing that could happen to the cause of Jesse Jackson and others like him is for Clarance Thomas to become validated and to be admired and honored by the minorities of this country. When the minorities begin to really believe in the power of the individual and less in the power of the masses, the tide begins to change and the demise of Jesse Jackson and others like him begins.

I believe he would be a wonderful Chief Justice. George Bush needs to make the same statement with Clarance Thomas that he has made with Colin Powell and Condi Rice. Treat them as the equal he and many others see them as.

Outstanding choice -- The BEST viable option.

My question is this -- When a sitting Associate Justice is picked to be the Chief Justice -- he has to go through the approval process. I'm wondering is his jeopardy as an associate justice at 'risk' if lets say, he is NOT approved. In other words, does he momentarily put his 'tenure' at risk.

He is by far my favorite justice. Would the left wing nut job Anita Hill be called back up to the hill during confirmation hearings?

I'm just glad that those names are in play instead of "Hillary Clinton" or "Ruth Bader Ginzburg" or any of the ACLU bottom feeders.

Either Clarence Thomas or Scalia is fine with me, but I think Scalia deserves it as much as CT.

I love Antonin Scalia!! An excellent man. But I think he would draw
a real firestorm from the left. Some of his public statements, etc.
Remember how they tried to make a scandal of his association with
Dick Cheney, it was just a group of guys on a fishing trip.

I don't think they would be so ready to attack Thomas, since he has
kinda flown under the radar for most of his years on the Court.
Also, his age is a factor. I believe he is only 59, which means that
we would have a good conservative Chief Justice for many years
to come. I'm not sure, but I think Scalia is 70.

I think President Bush is looking to the future, and wants to ensure
that the court will have strict constructionist, conservative direction
going forward. Long after his presidency is over.
