How do you define imminent threat? What do you call jihad indoctrinated combatants that steal our air planes and then crash them into our buildings killing over 3000 of our citizens? I sincerely believe if these jihad indoctrinated combatants were not so pre occupied with keeping a democracy out of the heart of the terrorist world we would have buried tens if not hundreds of thousands of Americans on the home land by now. These jihad terrorists are just looking for a way to get their reward of eternal virgins by killing infidels. |
Imminent threat is usually defined as 'the attack has begun'. The ICBM has been launched. The truckload of explosives is on the streets, heading for the building. The plane's cockpit has been commandeered. The train with the armed container is approaching city-center, etc., etc.
George Bush never proclaimed imminent threat when arguing for preemptive war. Instead, he advocated preemption before a threat became imminent - an eminently sensible approach.
I can see it now. We think an attack may be imminent. Notify the UN Security Council. All the "Excellencies" are at gala parties all over town and their double-parked limos are boxed in. Even if they can convene, there are the mandatory pleasantries which must be observed. As the US finally presents its case, the first reports of casualties come in from Chicago.
Utter and complete nonsense! This quaint, 1945-era debating society has been left behind by events and technology just as the League was before it.

But notice how quickly ABC is to bring the United States into this, Mark Rich notwithstanding...some of those suspects are big oil companies, and I'm sure, links will be found to the Bush family.
Sorry, I don't trust ABC as far as I can throw them. If they can find some way to link President Bush to this Oil for Food scandal...they will.

As we have so often been told on this board "the high road gentlemen, always the high road." Diplomatic standard requires that we Persona no Grata them - the entire UN and give them 72 hours to clear the country. After which we arrest anyone still in this country - and considering the crush at JFK International, that's likely to be a lot of them. _________________ Hating John Kerry continuously since 1971.

Just noticed this: ** U.N. Ambassador John Danforth Resigns ** Says he wants to be at home with his wife... I hope we can get someone a bit tougher in there -- with perhaps a more empassioned feel for the job and a little more commitment to it -- especially now.
This article says a bit more: ** Danforth Resigns **
Quote: | ...Danforth, who has been described as frustrated with the slow-moving U.N. bureaucracy, had recently told friends that he was running out of patience, especially with the Security Council, whose deliberations he considered difficult.... He campaigned vigorously to succeed Colin Powell as secretary of state... was described as disappointed when Bush picked ..Rice. ... The White House, meanwhile, was unhappy with some of positions Danforth, an ordained Episcopal minister, had taken at the United Nations, ..in particular his proposal that the agency create a committee on religion. |
(Looks like we're better off without him.) It will be interesting to see who replaces him now and if they will be able to handle the "difficult" Security Council, a minor criteria for the job, I'd think.

The UN definition of some situation that they can warrant military action against someone that threatens the US...is that someone that nobody else who sits on the UN security council or the UN itself has some financial interest in.
It has nothing to do with security, and as far as the US goes, they figure, we can either afford it...or take it. After all, what's a few dead americans? Makes the arabs happy. |

Danforth resigns
as U.N. ambassador
Ex-senator on the job only five months
John Danforth had been mentioned as a successor to Secretary of State Colin Powell, but he lost out to national security adviser Condoleezza Rice.
NBC, MSNBC and news services
Updated: 9:07 a.m. ET Dec. 3, 2004WASHINGTON - John Danforth has resigned as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations barely five months after he took office.
Danforth, 68, a Republican and former senator from Missouri, said in a letter to President Bush dated Nov. 22 that he and his wife wanted to return to St. Louis, NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reported Thursday. He will leave by Jan. 20, when Bush is to be sworn in for a second term, said Richard Grenell, a spokesman for the U.S. delegation to the United Nations.
Danforth, who has been described as frustrated with the slow-moving U.N. bureaucracy, had recently told friends that he was running out of patience, especially with the Security Council, whose deliberations he considered difficult, Mitchell reported.
In a speech last month in St. Louis, Danforth said that as a former senator, he was not accustomed to having a policy statement vetted by State Department bureaucrats and transformed into “mush” before he could issue it. “It creates some practical problems,” he told alumni at Washington University.
Unhappiness seen as mutual
A senior State Department official said Danforth’s decision was not surprising. He campaigned vigorously to succeed Colin Powell as secretary of state and was described as disappointed when Bush picked national security adviser Condoleezza Rice.
The White House, meanwhile, was unhappy with some of the positions Danforth, an ordained Episcopal minister, had taken at the United Nations, the official said, in particular his proposal that the agency create a committee on religion.
Officials at the White House confirmed that one reason Bush did not promote Danforth was that he was seen as inflexible and “sanctimonious,” Mitchell reported. But he is widely respected in Washington, having been tapped by presidents of both parties as a troubleshooter.
Danforth was sworn in as ambassador to the United Nations on July 1, succeeding Bush’s first ambassador, John Negroponte, who became ambassador to Iraq.
He has commented little on corruption in the U.N. oil-for-food program, which some U.S. legislators have blamed on U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He said only that everyone hoped that investigations by the United Nations and congressional panels would bring out the truth.
NBC’s Andrea Mitchell and Tamara Kupperman in Washington and Linda Fasulo in New York and Reuters contributed to this report.

Text of Danforth’s resignation letterNBC News
Updated: 7:16 p.m. ET Dec. 2, 2004Following is the letter of resignation sent Nov. 22 by John Danforth, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. It was obtained Thursday by NBC News:
Dear Mr. President:
After a lot of thought and prayer, Sally and I have decided to return to private life, hopefully beginning January 20 2005.
I want you to know how much I appreciate the opportunity to serve the United States at the United Nations. It has been an important time to be in this position, especially as we attempt to enlist greater UN participation in the future of Iraq, and as we advance the interest you have personally shown in helping the desperate people of Sudan. I am proud to be part of your administration.
Forty-seven years ago, I married the girl of my dreams, and at this point in my life, what is most important to me is to spend more time with her. Because you know Sally, you know my reason for going home.
In your second administration, there may be occasions when I can serve you from St. Louis, as I did as your special envoy for peace in Sudan. If so, please do not hesitate to call. In the meantime, I hope you will always know that I am your friend.
Sincerely,
Jack Danforth

That is letting them off too easy folks. We need to let our Middle East Vets extract their "pound of flesh" for the UN putting them in harms way.
Line up two hundred 155s along 1st Avenue pointed towards the UN building. The CINC will give our Vets the order “fire for effect”.
Talk about a few “shots heard around the world”.
By the way we should let some of our so-called friends remain in the building.

Ever since George Bush was re-elected, conservatives have been telling liberals to "get over it." Excuse me? "Get over it?" This wasn't a baseball game. This wasn't the Super Bowl. We're not sobbing in our beers because the Steelers whipped the Packers.
We're at war. People's lives are at stake. Every day, families are being destroyed, both here and in Iraq. To treat this election so dismissively is an insult to them and to the soldiers who gave life and limb in this war.
Could Kerry have stopped the war? Probably not. But four more years of Bush ensures we'll have four more years of the sort of short-sighted global policy that got us into this mess in the first place. |
