Supreme Court upholds photo ID law for voters in Indiana
The Associated Press

Mon, Apr 28, 2008 (7:17 a.m.)

The Supreme Court has ruled that states can require voters to produce photo identification without violating their constitutional rights. The decision validates Republican-inspired voter ID laws.

The court vote 6-3 to uphold Indiana's strict photo ID requirement. Democrats and civil rights groups say the law would deter poor, older and minority voters from casting ballots.

One small step for stopping voter fraud, one giant leap forward in common sense shown by our high court.

I believe one of the reasons this passed so well is that Indiana offers ID cards for free. If there had been a fee involved, it could very well have gone the other way as a "poll tax" issue.

I would be interested in reading the dissenting opinions.

Good point. I haven't read the opinion, but that could be a factor. States should provide free ID's for voters who don't have DL's or other photo ID's.
