"With respect: answer the questions," said Dan Rather, the CBS News anchor. He was asking a direct question to President George W. Bush, his re-election campaign and his political allies in the press and on the Web. "We’ve heard what you have to say about the documents and what you’ve said and what your surrogates have said, but for the moment, answer the questions.

"I say that with respect," he added. "They’d be a lot stronger in their campaign if they did do that."

On Tuesday, Sept. 14, Mr. Rather remained steadfast despite a brutal onslaught of criticism from Bush defenders—including Laura Bush—critics and competing news organizations over the authenticity of memos reportedly typed by Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, Mr. Bush’s squadron commander in the early 1970’s, which suggested that Killian felt pressure from his superior to "sugarcoat" negative evaluations of the future President’s performance.

Since 60 Minutes reported on those documents on Wednesday, Sept. 8, their veracity has been assaulted by Web critics, politicians and document experts who put the burden of proof on Mr. Rather, his producers and on CBS News, and say that the reputation of the news organization is at stake.

Mr. Rather asserted that the lack of denial was itself evidence of the essential truth of his findings. The questions raised by his reporting, he said, have remained unanswered by the Bush administration: Did Mr. Bush get preferential treatment for the Texas Air National Guard? Was then-Lieutenant Bush suspended for failing to perform up to Texas and Air Guard standards? Did then-Lieutenant Bush refuse a direct order from his military superior to take a required examination?

"It’s never been fully, completely denied by the Bush-Cheney campaign or even the White House that he was suspended for meeting the standards of the Air Force or that he didn’t show up for a physical," he said. "The longer we go without a denial of such things—this story is true."

Well, get ready for Congressional hearings very shortly. SeeBS will soon find that the only Constitutional protection permitted is the 5th Amendment, and as Martha discovered perjury is a punishable crime. . . .

Should be a wild and wooly October, might even make Nov/Dec 2000 look tame by comparision.

That is the exact answer the Bush people should give, if they give any at all.

Rather should be saying this to Kerry about the SBVfT questions, there's much more proof than couple of fake memos and an old lady in that story.

Can you believe the ARROGANCE of this man ???? Me thinks you have far more serious questions to answer Mr. Rather! Maybe you will answer them when you are charged with "fraud with intent to influence an election."

Fraud?

That's a bit like calling the memos a HOAX instead of FORGERY.

Treason is the word you are looking for.

That defense is roughly equivilant to going to the US Treasury department with a mimeograph copy of a $1000.00 bill.

"It doesn't matter that what's on the paper. I don't care that it's the wrong ink, on the wrong paper, with the wrong printing process, and was never minted by the treasury. It says it's a thousand dollars, just gimme change!"

I wonder how amusing a judge would find that defense?

NYtimes today: CBS documents "fake but accurate."

What the hell is that?

I have this fake 10 dollar bill, but it is an accurate dollar because the "10" is not an "11"?????????????????

With respect, nobody answers questions from a liar. Why would he, or any American, give you any respect when you stomped him with the ULTIMATE DISRESPECT. Why don't you just slink away. You're irrelevant now. And, take CBS and Juan Williams with you. [added by edit] On the Factor tonight (ugh), Juan Williams, attempting to DEFEND Rather, cast another smear on Larry Thurlow. Somebody ought to vet Juan.

It would be interesting if the White House yanked all the CBS press credentials and told them that they are only issued to legimate news organizations....

I can hear the squealing now. They would be louder than Helen Thomas.....

Wonderful idea. We all need to write our congressmen. BTW, I just heard on the Factor that CBS did this to Gen Westmoreland in 1982. I was aware of the smear in 1988 using non Vietnam vets to confirm the trauma. But this is the first I've heard of the Westmoreland tale. Anyone know who led the charge? Was it Rather?
